Dan Whitmore

A long-time denizen of Seattle, WA, Dan Whitmore, CPHC, CPHB is a founding member of the development group Red Door Sustainable Housing, and is in the throes of re-launching his construction company Blackbird Builders.

In an effort to evolve building practice, he combines a passion for the politics of energy, sustainability and social justice with over 35 years of residential construction experience. Fifteen years ago he discovered the passive house methodology and has endeavored to make it standard practice for his and others’ work since. From single-family homes in Western Washington State to tall modular apartments in Brooklyn to a law school in Bhutan, Dan has built and/or consulted on over 20 certified projects, aggregating to over 400,000 ft2 of buildings.

He also serves on the Boards of Phius and Passive House Northwest and is a constant advocate for regional advances in building practice. This advocacy sometimes takes him far from his home region.

David Schleicher

David started working with his dad’s framing crew when he was 12 years old. He watched and admired how the builders would interact with clients. How they helped the homeowner navigate the build process, and held their hands every step of the way.

Even at a young age David knew he wanted to build homes differently. He felt like there was a need for homes to be built to a higher standard. From his frustration with “cookie-cutter” home design and “traditional” building techniques, he discovered Passive House, the strictest energy and quality standard for construction in the world. Focused on innovative framing techniques and superior building envelope, Passive House creates premium indoor air quality and up to a 90% reduction in energy usage for heating and cooling. He got into Passive House as a means to scientifically prove that the homes he was building were better, would last longer, require less maintenance, and enable healthier, happier lives for his customers.

Most of what was being built in Kansas City was the opposite of David’s vision for the future of homebuilding, so in 2006 he founded Prairie Design Build (now Kala). David is a licensed General Contractor and Certified Passive House Consultant. His knowledge and experience in home building coupled with his drive and passion for building better has enabled him to pioneer the high performance home building industry in Kansas City.
